Feb 4, 2025

Chipman Design Architecture is welcoming 2025 with the promotion of four key team members to the role of Principal: Caitlin Gurra, Mark Scheerhorn, Dave Carlson, and Nelly Augustyn. These individuals have played a pivotal role in the firm’s growth and innovation, and their new positions reflect their leadership, expertise, and contributions to the firm’s continued success.

Caitlin, Mark, and Nelly, previously Senior Managing Directors, will take on expanded client-facing responsibilities and play a key role in business development. Dave, formerly Director of Technology, will continue to drive the firm’s technology strategy while shaping its future through innovation and security advancements.

CAITLIN GURRA – PRINCIPAL | LICENSED ARCHITECT

With a decade at Chipman, Caitlin Gurra is known for her leadership, process-driven mindset, and mentorship. In her new role as Principal, she is excited to guide younger team members and further the firm’s expansion into new sectors.

“It’s going to be exciting to get a deeper look into the business side of our firm while also helping develop the firm’s expansion into emerging markets,” she says. “I love the opportunity to mentor our growing team and bring fresh perspectives to our design process.”

Throughout her time at CDA, Caitlin has played a key role in numerous projects that reflect her passion for thoughtful design and strategic problem-solving. Some of her favorite projects include Chick-fil-A’s flagship restaurant on Michigan Avenue in Chicago and her most recent work with the fashion-forward retailer Reformation.

At home, Caitlin keeps busy with two young children and a brand-new puppy, making life both rewarding and lively.

MARK SCHEERHORN – PRINCIPAL | LICENSED ARCHITECT

Collaboration and cross-team synergy have been at the heart of Mark Scheerhorn’s career at Chipman since he joined in 2010. As Principal, he aims to break down barriers between teams, strengthen client relationships, and create a more connected firm.

“I’ve always worked with a diverse range of clients and personalities, and that adaptability will serve me well in this new role,” Mark shares. “I’m excited to expand my knowledge of our clients and work more closely with teams across the firm.”

Over the years, Mark has contributed to a wide range of projects, each presenting unique challenges and opportunities for innovation. Among his favorites is Jeni’s Ice Creams at Connors Park in Chicago, where he and his team transformed a greenhouse structure into an ice cream shop in the middle of a park. Another project that Mark holds in high regard is the Banana Republic store in the World Trade Center building in New York City. His keen eye for retail has continued with the completion of multiple stores for the up-and-coming fashion retailer Faherty.

When he’s not at work, Mark enjoys time at home with his two young sons.

DAVE CARLSON - PRINCIPAL | TECHNOLOGY

A driving force behind Chipman’s technology evolution, Dave Carlson has restructured the firm’s technology department and positioned it for future innovation. Now, as Principal, he will focus on advancing security, AI integration, and tech-driven efficiency.

“Our goal is to ensure that everyone at Chipman can do their job in the best way possible. With this new role, I can take that a step further—exploring how we can become true technology innovators in our industry.”

Outside the office, Dave stays busy with his two daughters, both under five. “We’re always on the move, taking the girls on adventures and making the most of these special years,” he shares.

NELLY AUGUSTYN – PRINCIPAL | LICENSED ARCHITECT

With nearly two decades at Chipman Design Architecture, Nelly Augustyn has been instrumental in shaping client-specific teams and optimizing operational efficiencies. In her new role, she’s eager to extend these efforts on a broader scale.

“I’m looking forward to leaning into people in a meaningful way—prioritizing mentorship, collaboration, and creating an impact beyond individual teams,” she shares. “We’ve spent years refining processes for client teams, and now I want to apply that same focus across the firm to elevate how we work together.”

From large-scale national programs to one-of-a-kind flagship spaces, Nelly has had the opportunity to shape projects that push design and functionality forward. Among her notable favorites are Puttshack in St. Louis, MO and her extensive work with Ulta Beauty, where she has managed projects for the major U.S. retailer for over 15 years.

Since joining Chipman in 2006, Nelly has balanced a thriving career with a busy homelife, raising her three children, a 13-year-old and 10-year-old twins. Outside the office, she finds joy in off-roading in her Jeep and connecting with fellow enthusiasts.
