Nutella Cafe
189 Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL
Nutella®, a Ferrero Group brand, looked to establish its first owned retail presence in the United States with a flagship concept on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue. Chipman Design Architecture served as Architect of Record, partnering closely with Ferrero and designer Slava Simontov to translate the brand’s vision into a fully realized restaurant environment.
Chipman Design Architecture led the development of construction documentation and guided the project through the City of Chicago’s permitting process, including coordination with the Chicago Loop Alliance. The work required careful alignment between the design concept and local regulatory requirements, ensuring a smooth path from concept to execution within a highly visible urban setting.
Located within an existing multi-story building, the project presented unique technical challenges that required thoughtful coordination and problem solving. Key features of the design, including a prominent fireplace element, required creative mechanical solutions and close collaboration with the client and landlord to confirm feasibility while maintaining the integrity of the original design intent.
The flagship establishes Nutella®’s first physical presence in the U.S., bringing the brand into a highly visible Chicago location through a coordinated approach to design and execution.
