Located at 145 N. Michigan Avenue, across from Millennium Park, Bye Bye Chicago brings a distinctly local perspective to a prominent downtown storefront. An unusual site condition raised the finished floor approximately four feet to meet the public sidewalk, requiring Chipman Design Architecture to carefully coordinate ceiling heights, clearances, fixtures, and architectural elements throughout the space.
Chicago’s industrial heritage and L train system shaped the retail design, with metal accents, exposed structural elements, brick, and concrete-inspired finishes reflecting the city’s architectural character. Custom Chicago red star lighting fixtures serve as focal points within the store, creating a recognizable connection to the city flag and strengthening the space’s sense of place.
A bold Chicago blue ceiling continues that reference, while epoxy flooring incorporates colors inspired by the CTA train lines to bring energy and movement to the customer experience. Together, these details create a memorable Chicago retail destination that feels connected to its Michigan Avenue setting and gives visitors a fitting place to take a piece of the city home.
