Buddy’s Pizza, a Michigan-based restaurant brand with a deep legacy in Detroit-style pizza, has experienced strong growth as it expands across the Midwest. With roots dating back to 1946, the original location on Detroit’s east side helped define the category, creating a foundation that continues to shape the brand today. As part of its expansion, Buddy’s turned to Chipman Design Architecture to develop restaurant design standards and a scalable prototype that honors its history while supporting a more modern dining experience.
Chipman Design Architecture led the development of the brand’s architectural framework, focusing on flexibility, operational clarity and a consistent customer journey across locations. The layout introduces distinct zones within the restaurant, including a robust bar, adaptable seating that can accommodate larger groups and more intimate booth settings, supporting a range of dining occasions within a single environment.
Materiality and detailing draw from the brand’s industrial roots while introducing thoughtful updates that feel approachable and current. Working with local fabricators, the team developed custom elements including wall treatments that reference traditional brick construction, reinforcing the brand’s heritage in a more controlled and repeatable way. Equally important was the integration of a clear and efficient takeout experience, with a dedicated carryout entrance and branded signage designed to streamline operations without disrupting dine-in flow.
The result is a restaurant prototype and rollout-ready design that balances history and growth, creating a flexible, comfortable environment that maintains brand authenticity while supporting continued expansion.
